Sir John Reginald Cassidy, Nudgee College 1906–1910
Sir John Reginald Cassidy was selected as the 1913 Queensland Rhodes Scholar. At the outbreak of war in 1914 he enlisted in the British Army and subsequently served on Gallipoli, rising to the rank of Captain by March 1916. He transferred to the RAF in 1918 and returned to Oxford in 1920 to study wireless.
In the junior public examinations conducted by the University of Sydney in 1904, Macrossan was awarded the T. J. Byrnes medal for obtaining the highest pass in Queensland; at the senior in 1906, he again topped the State.
John E Barry won second place in Queensland in the Senior University Examinations in 1920. He graduated from the University of Queensland in 1924 with first class honours in history and economics. He studied these subjects at Oxford after winning a Rhodes scholarship in 1925.
Peter John Kennewell was born on the 24th October 1953 and died on 22nd December 1980 — just twenty-seven years of age. Short years — but years in which Peter accomplished so much. Peter came to Nudgee from our Junior School and spent five years here.
Sir Robert Lowe Hall KCMG CB, Ipswich Grammar School, 1914-18
Topped the state in the Junior Public Examination. In the senior public examination in 1918 he was ranked seventh in the state, earning an open scholarship that enabled him to study engineering at the University of Queensland (BE, 1923).
Robert Barbour, Toowoomba Grammar School 1910-1917
Robert Barbour was a student at Toowoomba Grammar School from 1910-1917 and was the son of the School’s Headmaster. He was awarded the Rhodes in 1920 and later lectured at Adelaide University and The University of Melbourne.
James C Mahoney was the first Terrace Rhodes Scholar in 1929. Professor of the French Department at the University of Queensland until his retirement. He was awarded the Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur.
Herbert (Joe) Burton CBE, Ipswich Grammar School, 1914-18
Selected as Rhodes scholar for Queensland in 1922, Burton went to Queen's College, Oxford (BA, 1925; MA, 1929), and gained first-class honours in modern history.
